Chomping at the bit

The first blog post of 2017 can only start in a way: may the new year bring you everything you wish. On my side, though, it feels like 2017 has not started yet, and no, I don’t follow the Chinese calendar.

2016 was a year to remember for many reasons, and arguably the best in my sports career. The finale, though, left a bitter taste in my mouth. In the last days of the year, a painful tendinitis to my right knee forced me to stop riding, and I haven’t got back on saddle in spite of the therapies I have been taking. The seasonal debut, that was supposed to happen in Argentina, has been delayed, and I am honestly getting pissed with this situation.

This is the time of the year when you start putting quality kilometers into your legs: time for training camps, when you work and build up for the racing debut in the heat, be it in Argentina, Australia or Middle East. To see my colleagues in the action, live or on the photos posted on social networks, makes me even more willing to restart, and leave this forced stop behind.

I am in Spain, in Mallorca: I came here with my teammates, as per our programme, but I couldn’t do anything but therapies so far. But enough is enough: tomorrow I try to get back on bike, and I hope the knee will give me the feedbacks I hope for. If that’s the case, my countdown to the season debut will finally begin: it could be in Dubai, but I want to be cautious. Even for luck.

I believe Trek-Segafredo is poised for great things in the new season, as we have a really strong and competitive team on every terrain, and I am wearing a Tricolore jersey to honor also in 2017.  Just let it start. I can’t wait for it.
